The importance of regular dental check-ups and cleanings cannot be understated! Keeping your teeth and gums healthy plays a critical role in your overall health. You should have a regular dental visit at least every 6 months or more frequently if recommended by your dental professional.
What happens at regular dental visits?
There are 2 parts to a routine dental visit
At your appointment, Dr. CharuSaini and staff will check for cavities, take X-rays if needed to detect cavities between your teeth. The exam will also check for plaque (clear, sticky layer of bacteria) and tartar (untreated hardened plaque becomes tartar.)Plaque and tartarcause many oral diseases and contribute to tooth decay.
Dr. Saini and staff will also check your gums with a special tool to measure the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums. In healthy gums, these spaces are shallow, however, if you have gum disease, the spaces may become deeper. Further, your tongue, throat, face, head, and neck are also carefully examined to look for any signs of swelling, redness – which may be indicative of cancer. Dr. Saini will refer you to specialist if she notices anything concerning.
Your teeth will also be cleaned at your visit. While brushing and flossing help remove plaque from your teeth, you cannot remove tartar from teeth at home. During your routine cleaning, our team will use special tools to remove any tartar – this process is called scaling.
After scaling, your teeth will be polished using a gritty paste. This professional paste helps to remove any surface stains on your teeth. The final step is flossing. Dr. Saini and team will thoroughly floss to make sure the areas between your teeth are clean.
What else can be accomplished during a routine dental visit?
Your routine dental check-ups and cleaning appointments are a great time to ask Dr. Saini about any other oral health concerns you may have. If you are interested in professional teeth-whitening, getting veneers or interested in orthodontia treatment, Dr. Saini will be happy to discuss the best options for you.
