Effective brushing and flossing is the foundation for good oral hygiene and dental care. At Mapleridge Children & Adult Dentistry, we want our patients to practice excellent brushing and flossing techniques to keep tooth decay and cavities at bay. To do so, you need the right tools. Many patients ask if an electric toothbrush is really more beneficial than a manual toothbrush. An electric toothbrush can definitely scrub some hard to reach areas, but it does not necessarily mean it is better than a manual toothbrush. Our local dentist Dr. Saini and our dental team have put together the pros and cons of using an electric toothbrush and hopefully, our patients will be able to choose the best dental tool for themselves and their dental care needs.

Electric Toothbrush Advantages

Electric Toothbrush Advantages

The electric toothbrush is the newest model of toothbrushes and there are constant improvements to it. The Mapleridge Children & Adult Dentistry team believe there are two main advantages to an electric toothbrush: the easy technique and the convenient timer.

  • Easy Technique: The electric toothbrush makes brushing easy for any age. There is little work or technique involved, the toothbrush does it for you! This is also much easier for kids. The electric toothbrush will ensure plaque and bacteria are scrubbed away, they do not need to be a technique master. The electric toothbrush is also good for all types of braces, as it helps get into the small spots between brackets efficiently.
  • Convenient Timer: Most electric toothbrushes have an internal timer that lets you know when the two minute mark has been met. This will ensure you brush for the full time. Another easy adaptation for children or adults.

Electric Toothbrush Disadvantages

Although it may be easier to use, the electric toothbrush does come with some disadvantages. These include the following:

  • Batteries & Chargers: Electric toothbrushes obviously run on electricity, meaning they need some type of electrical source. Depending on the toothbrush, the source may be batteries inserted into the toothbrush or a charger stand. The electricity is necessary, but it can also be very inconvenient, especially when traveling or with limited space.
  • Easily Broken: Electric toothbrushes are more fragile than the manual toothbrush. If dropped, the toothbrush can be damaged or break all together.
  • Higher Cost: Depending on the brand and features, electric toothbrushes can be quite pricey. Manual toothbrushes are always much less expensive.

Ultimately, the electric toothbrush is a dental tool. If you use the tool correctly, it will be beneficial and it will have a positive affect on your dental care. Whereas if a patient does not use the electric toothbrush consistently, they may not have great results. In the end, it comes down to the patients preference and which type of toothbrush they believe is most beneficial for them.
